Overcoming the loss of a dream
This is a shining example of Crutcher's ability to meet a young person at his or her lowest point. Through his expert writing, he walks devastated characters from their dark hopelessness to a reasonable, acceptable reason for living. You really fight for this young man as he fights his way out of the quicksand.

Typical Chris Crutcher
Deals with loss and how a young man, who has everything going for him, soon finds himself unable to be an athlete. Crutcher does a great job of taking us on a journey with this young man. It's a wonderful and surprising journey.

MOre good guy stories
What can I say about Crutch. I have not finished this book yet, but already my interest is being held with his compelling and real life characters. I am wondering what will happen and what hidden stories will bubble out of this one.

Another Crutcher masterpiece
What a great story of despair and triumph---without a candy-coated ending. Crutcher tells is like it is!

wonderful read
While this is an older book, it's still a fine YA book and still a good read. Chris Crutcher doesn't go out of style

Doesn't feel dated at all, but starts out boring
This book was very slow to get started, I felt like I wanted to just power read to get through it, but there's a turning point, once the main incident happens, that hooked me and got me interested in Willie's story. The lack of pop culture references (I pretty sure that's a somewhat modern occurrence in books) means this doesn't feel too dated - I didn't realise it was released in the 80's - so it's in a way timeless. This deals with some heavy topics, Willie is injured in an accident, and his life feels like it's falling apart around him, but the darkness doesn't end there. Violence and aggression is a plenty in here, but there's also a positive over arching plot.Towards the end there's a bit of a speech from Willie about privilege, that wouldn't be out of place in a book written this year. It kind of took me by surprise how - for lack of a better word - 'woke' he sounded, considering this book came out over 30 years ago.All in all I'm glad I stuck with it, it's unfortunate how boring and slow the start is, because I'm sure it will put a lot of people off carrying on.
