Best Purchase of 2019
The media could not be loaded. My typical use for the Mars 400s is music video production and some occasional narrative content. The ability to use the transmitter with the included receiver as well as up to 4 Android/iOS devices, means that a lot of time is saved on set because less time is spent reviewing footage and reshooting. The director usually has the receiver hooked up to a monitor, and then the makeup artist, set designer, choreographer etc. can tune in to the live footage on their smartphone/tablet. This means that the director doesn’t have to look over the DP’s shoulder and can easily monitor the performance and direct the artists at the same time. The rest of the crew monitoring the footage on their phones can easily flag any problems during the performance, such as items accidentally left in the frame, issues with makeup, dance moves etc. Again, saving time and money by avoiding reshoots and fixing things in post-production. Finally, it makes the whole production process look much smoother and makes it more likely to be hired again in the future. I haven’t fully tested the advertised transmission distance as I haven’t had the need to, but I have never had any issues with the signal. I have even used the units in separate rooms and they worked flawlessly. I also found the latency to be a non-issue when pulling focus wirelessly. There is a cheaper version of this product called the Hollyland Mars 400, which only has HDMI and no SDI connection. I went for the SDI version because I wanted to have the flexibility if I ever need it in the future. If you don’t think you’ll need the SDI, I would go for the cheaper option. Now, for the Pros and Cons:PROSExcellent value for moneySmall and LightVery good build quality – Metal constructionLow Latency 1080p signal (Hollyland states less than 0.1s)400f/120m transmission distanceSupports 1 monitor and up to 4 mobile devices (iOS and Android)Versatile HDMI and SDI connectionsClear OLED Screen showing channel, connection status, image mode and batteryStraightforward Transmitter-Receiver Sync (Paired out of the box)Chanel Scan Function – shows the least congested channelsAbility to choose the desired balance between latency and image qualityCan be powered via AC or cheap Sony NP-F style batteriesCONSFan Noise**I have not found the fans to be an issue for me and I think the only scenario when this could cause problems is when trying to record sound directly from the camera mic. In my opinion, the fan is quiet enough to use with a shotgun or lav mic setup. This is possibly my best camera accessory purchase of 2019. It’s definitively not as exciting as buying a new camera, lights, gimbal etc. but in my particular case it has produced a massive boost in production value for all the projects that I used it for. In fact, I was so happy with it that I bought a second unit to use on my B Cam.

A good video transmitter
This does the job well. Nicely designed and well made. Fairly low latency, although can be a little tricky when pulling focus with it - but very good for the price. Has SDI & BNC.
