Packed with sizing (fabric stiffener) to the point it sheds water.
UPDATE: If you are shopping for towels to embroider, these will most likely be great if you are giving, perhaps one to each of several friends or loved ones. Hopefully they will respect your effort and just keep them in a drawer. But if you are ordering them as utility dish towels, you might be in for a little disappointment because they are thin, as others have said... sort of like the material you'd find in a white dress shirt... and they are not initially absorbent at all... and I do mean at all. Yesterday my order of 24 ea 12X12 AmazonBasics Cotton Washcloths arrived and I thought, before washing them, that I would test for absorbency. Poured a spot of water on the countertop, dipped one of the cloths in and it sucked the water away, dry! I did the same thing with one of these Cotton Craft dish towels (laundered once as described in the original review) and it got wet but didn't pull up the water. I then laid the folded towel on the remaining water and wiped, it spread the water, picked up some, but left the countertop wet. Nuff said? I might just use the wash cloths as dish towels because I'm sure one of them will hold more water than the larger dish towel.Original Review:I studied reviews for many brands of this same product and all of them ranged from 1 to 5 stars. I needed towels though, so I ordered these in hopes they are a little better than the brands that give away 200 sets in exchange for reviews. I do trust Amazon Vine reviewers but ones sought out by independent services worry me a little because so few of them really criticize the product. Easy to pick those products out because they have 50 or so 5 star reviews, each of which is about 6 words long.HOWEVER, the criticism from reviewers here about absorbency IS founded in truth. I am sure this is caused by the sizing they use to machine iron them for packaging, so that they look as nice as possible on the shelves (or possibly for the monogrammers and embroiderers)... and it will take several washes to get that out. I washed these exactly according to the directions, using Tide and a front loader pair ... set to gentle, cold, with second rinse turned on, then dried them on low heat. Before washing them, straight out of the package, water beads and runs off like from a raincoat, after one wash the cloth at least gets a little wet, but in order to wipe a small puddle you have to open the cloth and circle it around before it can dry a spot the size of a quarter... it just spreads the water around. Seems to me it would be a lot of trouble to wash these 4 times before use, so I am knocking off two stars for that. That small item covered, Let me say these are nice cloths, easily deserving a good review otherwise. The hems are very well done, no hanging threads, even after the first wash and dry. They are thick enough (barely) to feel like a real dishtowel rather than tissue paper. There is also a corner strap for hanging them, but I don't have anyplace that could handle something that big hanging diagonally ... certainly not from the kitchen counter because the towel is big enough that the opposite corner is on the floor.... not the product's fault, I'm just telling the people who want the hook strap they'd better have wallspace high enough. To me that looks a little unsightly anyway...I will count the number of times I have to wash these in order to start getting some "sponge-like" absorbency and then report that in an update.

Perfect
Great towels for iron transfer for embroidery. They are thick and will be great for in the kitchen. They are so soft that they can be used on a baby.I embroidered a set with baby things for a new mom. These even come with a hanger sewn in a corner.

Good quality
My mom and I use these for hand embroidered tea towels. They are of a good quality - not too thin.

Lemme tell ya what I’m lookin for in a flour sack towel. The criteria aren’t complicated: sturdy, dense, tightly-woven, heavy weight, straight-edged, well-hemmed, unblemished. A piece of fabric of sufficient quality to serve elegantly on the lap as a table napkin; or in the kitchen serving an all-purpose roll ranging from oven hot-pad, to dish drying, to finger towel draped over the chef’s shoulder; or in the utility room as a champion all-purpose cleaning cloth --- particularly on windows. How hard can that be? Apparently it’s pretty hard because most offerings peddled as “flour sack towels” don’t come close. To find towels that measure up, I bought six different offerings based on description and customer reviews and considered each carefully. Here is what I found.Aunt Martha's 28-Inch by 28-Inch Flour Sack Dish Towels, Premium 130 Thread Count, White, Set of 7. 525 customer reviews: 4.6 out of 5 stars. Measured dimension: 26-1/2” x 26”. Weight: 83 g. Hem: ½” all ‘round. Sides: straight all ‘round. Comments: hanging tab at one corner; wrinkle free; indisputable gold medalist. Rating: 5 stars.Liliane Collection. Measured dimension: 28-1/2” x 29”. Weight: 73 g. Hem: 2 sides ½”, 2 sides taped. Sides: straight. Comments: silver medal; nothing close to the gold medalist and not even as heavy as the bronze medalist, but they had a nice look and feel. Rating: 3 stars.Nouvelle Legende® Cotton Flour Sack Towels Commercial Grade 28in X 29in (4-Pack). 118 customer reviews: 4.5 out of 5 stars. Measured dimension: 26-1/2” x 26”. Weight: 82 g. Hem: ¼” all ‘round, but “shriveled”. Sides: slightly curved all ‘round, apparently from shrinkage. Comments: bronze medal; actually a bit heavier than the silver medalist, but their shrunken, wrinkled, unattractive appearance kept them from taking that slot. Rating: 3 stars.Utopia Kitchen. Flour-Sack-Towels Dish-Cloth Kitchen-Towels Pure Cotton 12-Pack, 28x28 Inch. 595 customer reviews: 4.7 out of 5 stars. #1 Best Seller in Cloth Napkins. Measured dimension: 28-1/2” x 30”. Weight: 70 g. Hem: ½” all ‘round. Sides: straight all ‘round. Comments: nice, but just too light weight and see through to finish as a medalist. Rating: 2 stars.Cotton Craft 12 Pack Flour Sack Kitchen Towels, Commercial & Professional Grade White 28x28 Pure 100% Cotton, Multi-Purpose High Quality Woven Construction, Will take a lot of wear and tear, Low Lint. 17 customer reviews: 4.6 out of 5 stars. Measured dimension: 27-1/2” x 27”. Weight: 87 g. Hem: all 4 sides: ½”. Sides: all four: straight. Comments: tab at one corner for hanging; some black ink staining; package contained 7, not 12 towels; would have been silver medalist were it not for the few ink stains and package count shortage. Rating: 1 stars.Luxe Home Essentials Flour Sack Towels Commercial Grade 28in X 29in (Set of 3 Towels). 55 customer reviews: 4.8 out of 5 stars. Measured dimension: 28-1/2” x 27”. Weight: 64 g. Hem: 2 sides ¼”, 2 sides taped (rolled?). Sides: curved like the letter “C” all ‘round. Comments: bandage gauze would come closer to qualifying as flour sack towel; I wouldn’t keep them if a loved one gave them to me. Rating: 1 stars

Just like the description.
Needed these for a Christmas gift craft activity at school. Very large and worked perfectly for our needs.

Came back and bought more.
These are very high quality with a folded stitched hem all the way around. I noticed no shrinkage on washing. They are thick and cut with the grain ("on the square"), which means that after you wash them, they fold right back into squares. I fold mine when they are almost dry (not dry as a bone) to make sure they are perfect. It's hard to describe the problem with cheaper versions if you're not a sew-er ( or you could google it) but cheaper ones won't fold into squares after washing because they have been cut on the bias and just get all out of whack. If you needed wonderful and/or huge napkins for dinner, these are fabulous enough to use and would easily fit/tie around the neck for eating BBQ ribs, as one example. Great seller.

Solid Towels at a Good Price
I purchased these for some handmade Christmas gifts (I'm using natural dyes on them). So far they are great towels. The quality is very good for the price and I find that they adsorb liquid very well.
