Lovely story for all ages
This one was actually recommended to me by my 10YO daughter, who read it alongside her WW2 studies. She absolutely loved the relationship between Davey and Tuckey, and demanded that we read this book together at home. She’s not much of a reader but this book ignited something in her; she was talking about it for MONTHS.So, having finally read it, I finally understand why she enjoyed it so much. It’s a lovely story about two boys uprooted during the London evacuations. Davey and Tuckey stick together. They’re the only Londoners in a strange new Devonian countryside, and when they come across a couple of German soldiers crashed on the moors, their life complicates further. The boys now have to figure out whether to help their sworn enemies or let them starve. It’s key that the boys are just children and trying to make these difficult decisions, because their minds are unclouded by prejudices. They are innocent, and merely assessing the situation based on the information they have. That’s the beauty in the story. Had the characters been adults I’m sure the outcome would have been more catastrophic. To me it demonstrates the kindness of youth and the ability to forgive even during war. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
