The Experience
Exceed is a two player fighting game, in which each player chooses a fighter and battles one another using a deck of cards (and a character card on a linear board). There are other games that are similar in concept, but this one is excellent. What gives this game so much depth is the wide variety of uses for the cards. Every card has an attack printed on it, and when someone initiates a "strike" on their turn, each player will choose one from their hand and lay it face down to simultaneously reveal it. *However*, at the bottom of each card is an *additional thing* that the card can be used for. Instead of striking on your turn, maybe you put one of your cards into play to make your next attack more powerful, or to ignore the opponent's armor, or to move when you strike, etc. The cards in your hand are also a resource that you use to pay for effects (called "force"). Want to spend your turn moving? That costs force. Want to get a *really* good card into play? That also costs force. Want to "Exceed" and become a more threatening/different version of your character? *That* costs "gauge", which is just attacks that you've managed to land against your opponent (your cards again). The fighters all feel wildly different, too. I didn't love this game until my friend introduced me to Taisei, a life draining hyper aggressive fighter who starts at half health and uses what little he has to fuel his attacks. He's in this set, and I'll give you a glimpse of each of the fighters here:Taisei: Very aggressive vampiric fighter that is most dangerous when he's close to death, which is great because he only starts at 15 health while most fighters start at 30. End the fight against him quickly, or he'll become unmanageable. (This guy's my favorite in the whole game)Geoffrey: Slow, painful, impenetrable, this guy is a juggernaut. If you trade blows with him, you lose. He'll drive you into a corner and keep you there, and he'll absolutely grind you to dust if you let him. Careful, friend.D'Jannette: Powerful sorceress who can set up threatening spells and nuke you from orbit for being careless. She can control the battlefield by putting down a spell circle and laying one of her attacks on top of it (face down). Maybe she's just bluffing, though... maybe.Celinka: High powered fast burn fighter. She can fuel her machine and keep it red-lined, but if you (somehow) manage to survive her aggression, she'll burn out. Intense fighter to play and play against.I love this game, and I hope that you will, too. It's *EXTREMELY* important that you get a fighter that resonates with you, though. They're so different that it is entirely feasible that you could really dislike the game with one, and really love it with another. I've seen that happen. Street Fighter is the upcoming season, so if you're into Ryu, Chun-Li, Akuma, or anyone from the series, pick them up! Should be available any day now. Have fun!
